Card Buddy Update History
Card Buddy is constantly improving! If you’ve missed what’s been going on in the app, take a look at the full history below.
2025/03/20 - Version 1.4.9 (iOS)
This update improves keyboard support on iOS:
- Fixed keyboard support on iPadOS, which stopped working with a previous iOS update.
- Improved keyboard support on iOS while editing a card: similar to the Mac version, if you move to the start of the text editor, and press left or up, you can navigate to the neighboring cell. Likewise, if you move to the end of the text editor and press right or down, you can move to the neighboring cell.
- Added shortcuts to cut, copy, and paste on iOS (cmd-C, cmd-X, cmd-V).
- Hitting Esc while editing within the canvas view will now save your changes
- In focus mode, you can now press Spacebar to flip a card, Return to start editing, Left and Right arrow keys to navigate.
2024/11/12 - Version 1.4.8
Made several speed improvements:
- Documents that have lots of images should load much faster now
- Scrolling around a canvas with many cards should feel snappier
- Saving to document is faster
2024/08/01 - Version 1.4.7
Mac
- Mouse support improved - scroll wheel can now zoom: just hold down option while using it. Right-click and drag to move the canvas.
- Ctrl+click and drag on the canvas will now move it.
- Your zoom level on a document, the scroll position, and the cursor location are now saved and restored
- Document window location is now saved and restored
- Added a toolbar menu to change card arrangement (how dropped cards push other cards)
- Shift-control-click and drag will now drag a single card without causing neighboring cards to move
- Fixed bug where cmd-Return would not work if Caps Lock was on
- Copy Reverse Side: use ctrl-cmd-C to copy the reverse side of a single card
- Fixed bug where if you copied a single card or multiple cards with images and text, paste would only paste the first image encountered. In this update, the text takes priority, so if you copy multiple cards with text and images, pasting to an external app will paste the text only.
- cmd-0 will now cycle through two zoom levels. The zoom levels are the last minimum zoom and last maximum zoom that were used.
- Zoom In and Zoom Out shortcuts (cmd-plus and cmd-minus) now zoom in larger increments and do a better job maintaining the cursor position relative to the scroll view.
iOS
- Added a menu to change card arrangement (how dropped cards push other cards) to the ellipsis menu
- Added new card arrangement setting to disable auto-arranging of neighboring cards when a card is picked up
- Your zoom level on a document, the scroll position, and the cursor location are now saved and restored
2024/07/22 - Version 1.4.6 (Mac Update Only)
- Fixed crash when copy-pasting a card into the text editor (instead of the canvas).
- Fixed hang bug when copying image cards into external apps.
- Improved modifier key behavior when dragging cards. Holding down option or cmd while dragging now updates in real time instead of requiring the key to be held down at the start of the drag.
2024/07/18 - Version 1.4.5
Mac
-
You can now import from CSV files. This makes it possible to import cards that were previously made using Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, or Apple Numbers. One card is generated per cell found.
-
You can export to CSV and XLSX (Microsoft Excel) as well! This is a great way to take your cards and load it into a spreadsheet app (Sheets, Excel, Numbers).
-
Importing will now create a new document, making it easier to pick and choose cards to add to existing documents.
-
Fixed issue with importing Markdown files where “” separator was not honored when creating multiple sides. (Card Buddy outputs multiple sides with “” as the separator between sides.)
iOS

2024/07/02 - Version 1.4.4
Mac
- Fixed crash on macOS 12 and 13 that would occur when dragging external files or importing from text or markdown.
iOS
- Fixed potential crash bug during import or drag and drop in older iOS versions.
2024/05/16 - Version 1.4.3
Mac and iOS
This updates includes numerous tweaks to smooth out the UI.
Drag and Drop Improvements
- You can now drag and drop cards between documents. (Mac only)
- You can drag selected cards out of the app into another app and the cards will be pasted as text. (Mac only)
- It’s now possible to drag and drop text files and markdown files into the canvas. On iOS, use the Files app in split-screen mode with Card Buddy to drag files in.
- Copy-pasting of files into the app now pastes all files. Previously, it would only paste the first file. (Mac only)
- Dragging selected cards with option key held down will now make a copy of the cards. (Mac only)
- Simplified how drag and drop of multiple cards works. They will now be dragged while retaining their shape instead of relying on holding down option to retain the shape.
Import
- Added import from from text file and markdown file to the File menu. Imported files can be text or markdown. Use three dashes “—” on a blank line to separate cards. (On iOS, use the ellipsis menu at the top of the screen while editing a canvas to import.)
Navigation
- Using the right arrow key will now move through all the available columns in the canvas instead of wrapping around to the next row once past all cards.
- Increased the navigable canvas area to include 10 blank columns to the right of the last populated column and 10 blank rows past the last populated row. (Previously, only 2 extra columns and 2 extra rows were provided beyond the last populated ones.)
Canvas Scroll and Zoom Fixes
- When opening a document, the zoom level will be set to better fit all the cards.
- On iOS, pinch to zoom in and zoom out affects the zoom level when double-tapping a card to zoom in and out. Previously, constant zoom levels were used, but now the app will record your preferred zoom levels and will snap to them when zooming in and out with double-tap.
- Zoom In and Zoom Out (cmd-plus and cmd-minus) will now adjust zoom level in smaller increments (10% versus 25%). (Mac only)
- Toggling zoom level using cmd-0 will now center the card at the cursor on the screen. (Mac only)
- Fixed bug where the canvas would “jump” sometimes when dragging and dropping cards.
Misc.
- Duplication now duplicates all cards selected instead of just the one at the cursor. (Mac only)
- Lay Out Cards now lays out cards to a 10 column x 50 row area instead of a 10 x 10 grid as it did before. (Mac only)
- Added Chroma Green and Chroma Blue colors to the background to help chroma key the background in videos.
- Improved the card selection behavior when reordering rows and columns and when moving selected cards around.
- iOS only: Fixed button layout so they’re centered instead of along the edges of the screen.
2024/03/18 - Version 1.4.2
- Fixed issue with app sometimes not detecting a purchase on launch
2024/01/28 - Version 1.4.1
Mac and iOS
- Improved Printing: You can now print the entire canvas to a single page.
- Export directly to PDF. You can export the entire canvas to a single page PDF, and without having to go through the print screen.
- Bug fixes: This update fixes issues that macOS Monterey users had with starting the app.
2024/01/25 - Version 1.4.0
Mac and iOS
- Printing is finally here! Print your cards, or export to PDF file.
- Improved Export to Markdown. Select two or more cards and only those cards will be exported.

iOS

Much, much more! Be sure to take a look at the What’s New file to see what has changed.
